If there is presence of water, it must be removed. In Quebec, with our climate, it is not enough to have a window in a bathroom to get rid of excess humidity as windows aren't opened when it is too cold. Heating a room or home full of humidity is more expensive than it is to heat a room with normal humidity. Homes should have air extractors to the outside in Quebec.
If presence of humidity is noted in basements, it could be due to lack of heating as basements used to be for other that living areas. Sometimes furnace filters are dirty, so can be air exchangers as these need regular maintenance.
The colder the temperature, the humidity seperated from the air and condensates on a surface which can encourage mold formation.
A leaky roof, a fan that evacuates in the attic, an attic that is overinsolated or non ventilated. These are elements that favor mold. Remember that yogurt, cheese are also a type of mold. One must not panick. Security first! Word of Marc-Andre
